Repair and Reuse Old Things – Dresser

January 20, 2012 by Linda

I sure like restoring and reusing things. I previously saw the Sherwin Williams paint color ‘Naval’ on Favorite Paint Colors. I really liked the color and was waiting for the perfect item to use it on. I came across this small chest of drawers and decided it was the piece to paint the color ‘Naval’. I think it looks great, don’t you? Now I have extra storage space in my laundry area, or where I need it. It’s so easy to fix something up. I simply sanded this piece lightly; washed it down; painted it; and applied new handles. I let it dry for at least 8 hours before I applied the 3rd and 4th coat of paint, just to be sure the paint was cured. All in all, it was a weekend project. Let’s keep things out of the landfill and reuse where we are able.

“Reduce, reuse, recycle, re-purpose!” Words to live by, and you certainly have and do! What a gorgeous chest of drawers Keep up the beautiful work!! My hubs and I try as often as possible to re-purpose things. One of our favorites is the kitchen island we created when we gutted and remodeled the kitchen in our 112-year-old farmhouse (when we bought it 7 years ago). The kitchen area was quite small, but large enough for our use. I wanted an island in the kitchen on which to do prep work, as we did not have a lot of counter space. We had an antique (Jacobean) buffet table. It is counter height, and about 42″ long. I had really wanted granite counter tops, but they were way out of our price range.

We decided, rather than to create a permanent island space in the middle of the kitchen, to purchase a piece of granite large enough to top the buffet, plus hang over enough on one side to make a “bar” under which we could place a couple of stools to use for casual dining or at which to work while seated. We put casters on the table’s feet so we could roll it around or out of the way, if we wanted or needed to, plus brackets under the granite to support the overhang. There are two drawers on one side of the table that I have used to store my spices and some cooking tools. As a “finishing touch,” I had our electrician put a grounded electrical outlet in the floor beneath the table, so that I could put my stand mixer or other appliance on the island for convenience if I was using it for those things. It has worked out beautifully! We get more comments on it than anything else in the kitchen.

Re-purposing often yields things that are better than anything you could have bought already made, and they are unique and not something you would see everywhere else. Your chest is beautiful enough to be anywhere in your house! What a lucky laundry room!

Thanks Suzi, I’m thinking about how I’ll use the rest of the paint.
